While gunpowder is outlawed in the Dominion, it does have a presence in the lawless hinterlands of Varantium.

Varantium is a country that is part of the Holy Dominion of Archanicus on the southeast of the Halim Peninsula , ruled by the archonRadiant Lord . It borders three of the Dominion's provinces and Nalbin , and is closely connected overseas to Jovinium and the Plutarian islands. It has a long coastline against both Inner Sea and Plutaran Sea, with warm subtropical climate.

Varantium is the largest province in the Dominion by scale and third-largest by population. The province of Varantium was the capital of the Faloran Imperium before it became the seat of Radiant Lord under the Dominion, and has exerted strong cultural, economic, military, and political influence around the world. Its capital city Falor - the Old Capital - is regarded as the cradle of Faloran civilization and the "Father" city of the Faloran peoples.

Though the Faloran rebels of the Faloran Republic consider Varantium to be soil that rightfully belongs to their people, they were unable to hold it and were forced to flee across the bridge connecting Varantium to the Faloran home island. The rebels then destroyed the bridge behind them, to protect themselves from the Dominion's weight of numbers.

Today, Varantium's southern coast has been sundered by constant raids from the Faloran Republic, and all trade by sea has been disrupted save, for along the eastern coast. The region's riches have been thrown in the fires of war against the Faloran Republic, and now the region is one of the most sparsely populated of the Holy Dominion of Archanicus, when once it was the richest province.

The Radiant Lord rules from the Old Capital, an Archon who once symbolised the light of the sun, justice and vengeance - but he has become decadent and slothful, while the people starve.

[game-time updates]

Etymology

Unknown, sharing origin with the name of the Varantian people.

History

Seat of Faloran kingdom, then Imperium. Was for a long time shielded by the Emperor's influence from the archons, but eventually taken over by Radiant Lord. Nationalistic and progressive ideals have stirred up several civil wars in the region.

Geography and subdivisions

With an area more than twice the size of Spain, Varantium is freaking huge.

Politics and government

Radiant Lord.

Military

Lots of it, haphazardly organized.

Demography and culture

Despite centuries of decline, the region's total population still makes it one of the largest in the Dominion, and larger than many other "free" nations. Varantian and Faloran natives make up a large portion of the population, but with recent years' displacement other inhabitants of the Dominion have come to form an increasing presence.

The coastal regions have been devastated by the long, intermittent warfare against Malvern and then Falor, and the region is much declined from its former glorydays. Even so it remains - by its exposure to the "free" nations - a conduit of new technologies and ideas into the Dominion. While gunpowder is outlawed in the Dominion, it does have a presence in the lawless hinterlands of Varantium.
