Radiance during the Eclipse

Radiance is the ancient Archon of the Faloran peoples. Before there was a Dominion, before there even was a First Faloran Empire, there was Radiance. He was the family spirit of the Palaienid dynasty, one of the foremost of the Faloran noble houses during the great migrations of the Faloran people. Over the centuries of Faloran conquests, from the founding of Malvern to the establishment of the Faloran Empire in the north, Radiance guided the Palaienids.

By the time of the founding of the Dominion and the end of its civil war, Radiance had slipped into decadence, and within one hundred years of the Dominion's founding, had became comatose, with only brief bouts of clarity and authority.

His inactivity allowed his Seraphs to rule practically unchallenged, but split in bitter rivalry amongst themselves. Black Sun and Dawn Lantern in particular carved out two major spheres of influence for themselves. Dawn Lantern was the chief influence in the outlawing of gunpowder, which helped to bring about the conflagration that was the Faloran Civil War.

It was his humiliating silence which led many High Palatines to feign the ability to speak with him, leading to the particularly degrading reign of High Palatine Galav Nusidio Victrufa. During the reign of his predecessor, Falca, Radiance had showed signs of coming awake once more - but Falca's death had destroyed that hope. Galav pretended that Radiance had awakened, and that he spoke for him. The unveiling of the truth led Galav to commit suicide, allowing for Manlia Suren Issander to take his office.

During Manlia's brief tenure, the Faloran Republic marched on Falor during the Eclipse. Manlia Suren Issander managed to awaken Radiance, but that did not make Radiance any less decadent. Manlia died defending Radiance from Pietro Gori, the High Inquisitor of the Republic.

Influence on Society[]

In the year 621 AS, the astronomer and philosopher Axanogos of Sabria presented his theory of moonlight to the Imperial Court. He posited that the Moon did not generate its own light, but instead merely reflected the light of the Sun. While the many scrolls of proofs that he presented were solid, it is widely accepted that the approval of the Radiance Cult is what ultimately earned his theory official approval and recognition. The followers of Radiance believed that his theory to be a long awaited example of science validating their religion. Among the most vociferous critics of Radiance in the Republic and in Malvern, belief is growing that the moon generates its own light.
